- SOMEONE ONCE SAID
The Mojo Dojo is a strictly judgement free zone
We invite you to leave your ego at the door with your shoes.
Growing up as a painfully self conscious perfectionist, Ballantyne is well aware of the horrors of fearing judgement. It took her four years of serious persuasion to get her to even attend a Nia class. She spent the first couple of classes clinging to the walls (not literally!) and hiding at the back of the room, until... she realised you can't dance Nia 'wrong'. This was a revelation to her and the beginning of her liberation! It was a journey... but she has never looked back. Ballantyne shed her shackles and relaxed into the glorious freedom and self expression that is Nia and she wants you to find the same joy. She does her best to keep the Mojo Dojo a safe, friendly, judgement free zone, where we can all reconnect with our mojos together.

BALLANTYNE HAINESMojo Dojo Creative Director & Nia InstructorBallantyne's dance journey started when her mum dared her to attend a belly dancing class in 2010. She loved the class so much that they continued to belly dance together for around 2 and a half years.
It took 4 years of heavy persuasion from Ballantyne's Mum to get her to attend her first Nia class. A hopeless perfectionist, Ballantyne was terrified of the idea of 'freedance'. In a moment of weakness (or absolute faith) - we're not sure which (but we suspect the latter!) - Ballantyne agreed to attend, that was nearly 3 years ago. Two months later she sat her White Belt with Nia Founder and Co-Creator Debbie Rosas, and it was on like donkey kong from there! She co-taught her first class on Independence Day 2017, but it wasn't until she stepped up to fill her teacher's shoes for a month in 2018 that she really grew Nia wings. Through dance Ballantyne learnt to love her body, through Nia Ballantyne learnt to love her soul. Ballantyne found her Mojo at the 'dojo' let her help you find yours! Ballantyne's background is very varied. She trained for 10 years as a classical singer, releasing a solo album in 2007 entitled 'Land of Hearts Desires', she was a member of the New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company in 2007, going on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film Making at the University of Canterbury and a Licentiate Diploma in Speech and Drama from Trinity College London. She is an actress, artist, designer, classically trained singer and film maker and currently works as the Creative Director of an online company, specialising in positive psychology, authenticity and happiness. You can see her other work here: www.ginahaines.com or www.ballantynehaines.com Ballantyne hates shower curtains, isn't a major fan of earwigs, talks to daisies, secretly loves listening to Pitbull and Daddy Yankee and has pet sheep. OR My Nia journey began one evening when my mum, full of enthusiasm gave a graphic kitchen floor demonstration of the Nia Five Stages (something she’d learnt at her new favourite class). I was easily shocked, and terrified of the descriptions and expressions of freedom, I declined mum’s weekly invitations to accompany her for FOUR years! Eventually, I bargained with mum and agreed to attend one class in exchange for no more invitations. Thank goodness my mum has the patience and forgiveness of a saint and was able to see past my closed mindedness and persist with her invitations using her ‘mum knows best’ clout to get me onboard! (Also to graciously accept my humble pie apology when it inevitably arrived) I remember that first class and the way I was so intimidated and fearful of the unknown. I felt like a turtle cautiously edging its head out of its shell to view the fullness of the world. BUT I was curious to try more. Growing up as a painfully self conscious perfectionist, hyper-alert to the horrors of fearing judgement, the concepts of FREEdance and ‘dancing my body’s way’ were petrifying voids for me. I spent the first couple of classes clinging to the walls (not literally!) and hiding at the back of the room, until... I realised you can't dance Nia 'wrong'. This was a revelation to me and the beginning of my liberation! It's an ongoing journey... but I've never looked back. I feel like every time I step in I shed my shackles a little bit more and relax into the glorious freedom and self expression that is Nia - pure unbridled joy. My relationship with my body went from detached and unhealthy, to a fascinated, respectful, loving and unquenchable adventure of sensation. Nia teaches me to love my body from the inside out and I am exceptionally grateful for that. I attended my White Belt training with Debbie Rosas in 2017 (two months after that first class) and it was on like donkey kong from there! I co-taught my first class on Independence Day 2017, but it wasn't until I stepped up to fill my teacher's shoes for a month in 2018 that I really grew Nia wings. I started teaching a weekly class towards the end of 2019 and frequently cover other local teachers when requested. My background is very varied. I trained for 10 years as a classical singer, releasing a solo album in 2007 entitled 'Land of Hearts Desires', I was a member of the New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company in 2007, going on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film Making at the University of Canterbury and a Licentiate Diploma in Speech and Drama from Trinity College London. I am an actress, artist, designer, classically trained singer and film maker and currently work as the Creative Director of an online company, specialising in positive psychology, authenticity and happiness. For me, Nia is the fastest and most guaranteed way for me to connect with source and the truth of who I am. When I step in on that first song leaving distractions behind, I step out of my self consciousness and into the company of my highest self. Spending this quality time with my unbridled authenticity for me is pure ecstasy. Nia is joy, self expression, self realisation, freedom, focus, form and fun. I am grateful everyday for the gifts that Nia has given me and for the ever unfolding journey I find myself on as I dance through life. So the big question is... where will Nia take you?! |
